Artifact - Engaged Learning Project
For this artifact, I chose my Engaged Learning Project completed in the summer semester for ITEC 7400, 21st Century Teaching and Learning. This project meets this standard because it uses digital tools and resources to engage students in an authentic learning experience which is aligned to the math content standards and the PSC and ISTE standards for technology. In addition, it challenges students to develop strategies to solve real-life mathematical puzzles and problems.
This artifact demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate authentic learning experiences as an instructional technology coach. In my current position as a high school media specialist, I have no classroom for which to plan. It is necessary for me to build partnerships and help teachers design real-life lessons that integrate technology and promote higher order thinking in their content areas. "The Reimann Lab Authentic Math Project" challenges students to collaborate with professional mathematicians and college students to develop strategies to attack authentic unsolved math problems such as the Reimann Hypothesis. This project is an authentic learning experience because students will investigate problems in mathematics, making conjectures, exploring examples, constructing counter-examples and trying to prove special and also general cases. Working with mentors in higher education and generating a website to share what they have learned also makes it authentic.
In this artifact, I learned to stretch myself. Although one thing I would change would be to plan it in collaboration with a teacher, planning it alone is what allowed me to reach for the outstanding. I think if I had worked in a real situation, I would have been weighed down by impracticalities or hesitation on my collaborating teacher’s part. As it was, I handed this teacher a package that he loved and was excited to pursue. Although this project has not yet been implemented, I believe it will happen if we remain persistent.
This artifact has already impacted faculty development by stimulating my collaborating teacher and me to design exceptional, authentic instruction and to reach beyond the classroom walls to extend student learning into the real world. When implemented, it will impact student learning by challenging them in ways that spark their critical thinking abilities and creativity. It will provide them with the opportunity to work with experts in the field on meaningful tasks and then to share what they have learned with the world through the website they will create.
