The One Hour Workshop I developed for ITEC 7460, Professional Learning and Technology, met Standard 3.3 because it required that I model and facilitate the use of online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student learning and expand opportunities for professional learning for teachers. For this project I had to think about the needs of my teachers and students and design a one-hour technology workshop to teach them the skills they would need to incorporate digital technology into their instruction in order to enhance student engagement and learning.
Over the past 3 years, my administration has purchased 20 SMART Boards for classrooms. Many teachers who have this technology in the classroom either do not use or use it simply to navigate their computers while standing in front of the class. In this scenario, instruction is still teacher-centered. I wanted to give my teachers the skills they need to be confident in using the SMART Board technology as a way to engage students in tasks and make instruction student-centered. I also wanted my teachers to leave the workshop with lessons in tact that they could use in their classrooms. Previous SMART Board training had been conducted by our local school technologist and had consisted merely of a 20 minute demonstration of how to use the tools. In this training, teachers saw someone use a tool, left, and immediately forgot what they had seen. This assignment challenged me to create an effective workshop which would result in teachers gaining confidence in using the SMART Board digital learning tool and taking advantage of the online learning network called SMART Exchange.
I created many documents to support my workshop and posted all of them on my "SMART Way to Review" webpage so that teachers could refer to them during and after the workshop. The lesson plan I had to create was a great template to use for future workshop plans. I had to identify my learning objectives, standards being addressed, materials needed, time and place, promotional materials, process and evaluation.
In the past I have tended to improvise my in-services. Through this assignment, I learned the value of careful planning to create valuable learning experiences for my teachers. Part of this assignment was to videotape the workshop and also to survey the participants. Once I was done, the information gleaned from these resources helped me reflect on the whole experience and analyze how I could improve. Attendance was rather disappointing with only 7 participants. I attribute this to having to conduct the workshop after school when many teachers have coaching or club duties or simply don't want to stay late. When I conduct this or similar workshops in the future, I will try to do so on professional learning days or during monthly professional learning blocks when teachers are more likely to attend.
All -in-all, this was a valuable learning experience for me and my teachers. This artifact impacted faculty development by giving teachers the training they need in order to effectively integrate SMART Board technology into instruction to enhance student engagement and higher order thinking skills, thus also impacting student learning. It impacted school improvement as well, since one of our school goals is to improve the integration of technology into teaching and learning.
